About

GrowBoston builds on the long-term work of the Mayor’s Office of Housing (MOH). MOH, through the Grassroots Program, has been supporting the development of. community gardens, urban farms, food forests, and other open spaces through land disposition and capital funding for more than 25 years.

GrowBoston will be working to increase community gardens, urban farms, and other food-growing spaces throughout Boston. We will support the implementation of innovative food production strategies, such as rooftop growing, vertical growing, and hydroponics.

We provide technical help to prospective and existing gardens and farms. Our team develops educational and other food production resources for gardeners, farmers, and residents. We partner with sister agencies to leverage public facilities to increase food production. We also coordinate with other City departments to make food production more accessible in Boston.

GRASSROOTS OPEN SPACE PROGRAM FUNDING

GrowBoston is seeking proposals for capital funding to support the creation of or improvements to urban farms, community gardens, food forests, and passive open spaces. GrowBoston expects to make awards of up to $100,000 to eligible 501(c)3 nonprofits. Projects must serve low- and moderate-income individuals. The proposal deadline is April 4, 2023 at 4:00pm.

GRASSROOTS YOUTH LEAD THE CHANGE SPRING FY23 FUNDING

GrowBoston is making up to $250,000 available to support the creation of and improvements to urban farms, community gardens, food forest, or other food producing projects that engage youth. The capital grants of up to $100,000 are available to eligible 501(c)3 nonprofits for projects in Roxbury, Dorchester, or Mattapan. The proposal deadline is April 10, 2023 at 4:00pm.

Grassroots Program

The Grassroots program supports the development of community gardens and other open spaces. The program provides grant funds, City-owned land, and technical help to neighborhood groups and nonprofits. The goal is to help those who want to organize, develop, own, manage, and maintain community gardens, farms, and other open space in low- and moderate- income neighborhoods.

We Grow Microgreens

We Grow Microgreens, LLC, owned and run by urban growers Lisa Evans and Tim Smith. specializes in growing highly nutritious microgreens, edible flowers, tea leaves, herbs and medicinal plants using sustainable and regenerative growing practices. The farm grows predominantly with natural sunlight operating out of a beautiful glass greenhouse, two high tunnels and raised garden beds.

Produce from We Grow Microgreens is sold at their Farmstand in Hyde Park at 21 Norton St. Hyde Park, Fridays from 1:00 –4:30pm and in the Spring, Summer and Fall on Thursdays from 2:00 to 6:00 pm.

Produce from the Boston Medical Center Rooftop Farm is used in the Boston Medical Center food pantry, cafeteria, and teaching kitchen. A weekly farmers market (Tuesdays 12-1) in the Shapiro Building of the hospital sells produce at a subsidized price for hospital staff and patients. A second rooftop farm affiliated with the hospital, located on 960 Mass Ave., will be opening early summer 2023. To learn more about the farm, visit Boston Medical Center's website.
