Voting reminders ahead of the September 1 State Primary

With the State Primary fast approaching, we have information below on your options for voting over the next few days.

If you requested a ballot

There’s still time to vote ahead of the State Primary on Tuesday, September 1. On Friday, there are three options to ensure your vote is counted:

  1. The most effective way to have your vote counted is to vote in person on Election Day, or to vote early. On Friday, City Hall is open for early voting until 5 p.m.
  2. If you received a mail-in ballot, please complete and mail your ballot as soon as possible. This can be mailed or placed in a dropbox on the third floor of City Hall until 5 p.m. on Friday.
  3. If you have concerns about your mail-in ballot arriving on time, please consider voting in person on Election Day. You can find your polling location on the state's website. Before voting in-person, take a look at the health and safety precautions we're putting in place. 

There’s still time to vote. Today, there are two options to ensure your vote is counted:

  1. If you have concerns about your ballot reaching the Election Department in time to be counted (8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1), we encourage you to vote in person on Election Day. Find your polling location. You can review the health and safety precautions we're putting in place for in-person voting.
  2. If you are unable to vote in person, there is still time to return your mail-in ballot to the Election Department. To track the status of your mail-in ballot, visit the state's website.
    • You can also return your completed mail-in ballot using the dropbox on the third floor of City Hall on Monday, August 31, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., or on Tuesday, September 1, from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. 
    • For your convenience, an additional dropbox is accessible today, August 29, and tomorrow, August 30, from 9 a.m - 5 p.m. The dropbox is located on the 1st floor of City Hall (entrance via Congress Street).

Remember: All ballots must be received by the Election Department by Tuesday, September 1, at 8 p.m.

    • For your convenience, an additional dropbox at City Hall is accessible today from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The dropbox is accessible from the entrance at Dock Square across from Faneuil Hall located on the 1st floor of City Hall (entrance via Congress Street).

  • If you have concerns about your mail-in ballot arriving on time, please consider voting in person on Election Day. Before voting in-person, take a look at the health and safety precautions we're putting in place.

Today is Election Day and there is still time to vote! There are two options available to cast your vote. 

  • Cast your vote today at your polling location. To find your polling location, visit the state's website. All polls are open from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m. Before voting in-person, take a look at the health and safety precautions we're putting in place.
  • You can also return your completed mail-in ballot using the dropbox on the third floor of City Hall or the dropbox at the first-floor entrance (Congress Street) of City Hall from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Remember: All ballots must be received by the Election Department by Tuesday, September 1, at 8 p.m.

Returning your completed ballot

Dropboxes available

If you requested a mail-in ballot, but don't feel comfortable mailing it back to us, there's a dropbox at Boston City Hall and at all early voting sites. The City Hall dropbox is available during these hours:

  • Friday, August 28,  from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 29, from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Congress Street entrance)
  • Sunday, August 30, from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Congress Street entrance)
  • Monday, August 31, from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Monday, August 31, from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. (Congress Street entrance)
  • Tuesday, September 1, from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Please note:
  • There's only on vote per person.
  • Your completed ballot must arrive at the Elections Department by 8 p.m. on September 1 to be counted.
  • You CANNOT drop off your mail-in ballot at your polling place, but you can drop off your ballot at the City Hall dropbox up until 8 p.m. on Election Day.
  • If you bring a mail-in ballot to your polling location on Election Day, you will still be able to cast your vote in-person at that location. A poll worker will ensure your mail-in ballot is spoiled before you can cast your ballot in person.

The most effective way to have your vote counted is to vote in person on Election Day. Please note: There are polling location changes for 20 precincts ahead of the State Primary.

Requesting an accessible electronic ballot

To get access to the Accessible Vote by Mail System, you must first submit a request for accommodation to the Accessible Vote by Mail Coordinator at Kelly.Emmons@sec.state.ma.us by August 28, 2020, at 12 p.m. You may also reach the Coordinator by phone at 617-727-2828

Requirements

You'll need to provide the Accessible Vote by Mail Coordinator the following information: 

  1. a statement confirming that you're a registered to vote and requesting use of accessible vote by mail because of a disability
  2. your full name (first, middle, last)
  3. your registreation address (street address, city/town, zip code)
  4. your mailing address, if different that voter registration address 
  5. Your date of birth, and
  6. your email address and phone number.  

You must also email the Coordinator a 2020 Vote by Mail Application with all of fields completed, including the date and signature (electronic signature is acceptable).
